Context of feminine creation

Bite Vilimaitė was influenced by Žemaitė and Povilas Višinskis, who lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries. She has even written short stories for Žemaitė. Bitė made her debut with famous writers in Lithuania like Saulius Šaltenis, Judita Vaičiūnaitė, Vladas Šimkus, Leonidas Jacinevičius, Rimantas Šavelis, Petras Dirgėla and others who created works in the 20th century.

Other Lithuanian women writers of the same period are Vidmantė Jasukaitytė, Jolita Skablauskaitė, Nijolė Miliauskaitė, Vanda Juknaitė, etc.

Review

She was born into the family of a veterinarian in 1943. From 1960-1965 she studied Lithuanian language and literature at the Faculty of History and Philology of Vilnius University. Despite the usual canons of the genre, Vilimaitė immediately created a unique model of a short condensed short story, to which she remained faithful. She began to talentedly describe the little things that have accumulated a tremendous amount of mental energy, especially in a woman’s world. Vilimaitė was the first Lithuanian writer to cleverly ontologize everyday life, elevate the everyday detail to a metaphor or symbol, and show its beauty and value.

Justifications

  • Bitė Vilimaitė is the brightest representative of a laconic short story.
  • The main theme of her work is a woman and her destiny.
  • The short stories avoid drama and painful things.
