Context of feminine creation

She follows the tradition of storytellers such as Teresa Vernet, Mercè Rodoreda, Montserrat Roig, the Majorcan Carme Riera or the Valencians Maria Ibars, Carmelina Sánchez Cutillas, Pepa Guardiola, and Isabel-Clara Simó.

The female Catalan literary scene is filled with young voices such as that of Clara Queraltó. There are writers who are clear about women’s claim of their role in society, and so they convey this idea to the reader such as Irene Solà, Marta Orriols, Marta Rojals; the Majorcan Llúcia Ramis; or the Valencians Mariló Álvarez or Mònica Richart.

Review

In her stories she addresses various topics such as disillusionment, frustration, fear, sadness, anger, hatred, resentment or revenge and gives voice to narrative voices of different generations. Her fight against gender violence is portrayed in a raw and surprising manner.
In September 2021, she published her first novel, Et diré R, in which the protagonist has to face early motherhood. Oddly enough, it is not the first Catalan novel of recent years in which pregnancy and motherhood are seen as a threat to love and life of their own.

Justifications

  • Story writer and novelist.
  • Winner of the prize Mercè Rodoreda in 2017.
  • She deals with eternal topics such as fear, isolation, incomprehension or solitude.
  • She includes female characters and other vulnerable characters in her writings, such as victims of male violence or young homosexuals.
  • Fresh, direct and honest language that breaks ground.
  • One of the young voices of the Catalan literary scene.

Biography

Clara Queraltó comes from Pla del Penedès, one of those villages of just over a thousand inhabitants. She is a philologist and writer and has specialized in literature theory. She works as a teacher of Catalan language and literature with strong ties to her home town.

With her first work El que pensen els altres (Proa, 2018) she received the award Mercè Rodoreda for Contes i Narracions in 2017. The prose of Queraltó is straightforward, simple and, at the same time, delicate. A Rodoredian poetry can be seen in the texture of her tales and, for this reason, she is even more deserving of this award.

Although she is a faithful consumer and lover of short stories, she has set foot in the novel world with her first novel Et diré R, published in 2021. This work presents the story of a girl who, after fleeing home, becomes pregnant and has to face early motherhood. Generally speaking, the novel is a long letter addressed to R, in the manner of a literary offering. The reader becomes R.
